Natural Treatments For Canine Lymphoma

Lymph Nodes On A Dog

Canine lymphoma is a common form of cancer in dogs and includes over 30 different forms, which vary in aggressiveness, symptoms and prognosis. Symptoms often include: painless swelling of lymph nodes, lack of appetite, weakness, lethargy, and weight loss. Canine lymphoma can occur in any dog, but some breeds that are inflicted more often are Boxers, Golden Retrievers, Saint Bernards, Basset Hounds, Airedale Terriers and Bulldogs.

Lymphoma is cancer of the lymphatic tissue. The lymph system is a core part of the body’s immune system. The lymphatic system is an extensive drainage network that defends the body against infections. It is comprised of a network of lymphatic vessels that carry lymph (a clear, watery fluid that contains protein, salts, glucose and other substances) throughout the body. The lymphatic system also serves as a low-pressure drainage system that collects interstitial fluid throughout the body and returns it to the bloodstream.

Unfortunately, there is not a cure for lymphoma and the best course of action will depend on the type, stage and aggressiveness. Even though a cure is not possible, a pet can go into remission for a period of time with treatment. Chemotherapy is the most common treatment offered to canine lymphoma patients.  Even if you choose not to pursue chemotherapy, seeking the advice of a cancer specialist, referred to as a veterinary oncologist is recommended.  This is because you can gain insight and be sure you have explored all of your options from a cancer expert.  Regardless of what treatment you and your family pursue, supportive care using a cancer diet and holistic supplements can improve the quality of life for your pet and sometimes, the quantity of time as well.  We have worked with many canine lymphoma patients since 2005 and have found that pets that used both conventional and holistic treatments fared best.
