Sophie was an amazing survivor and a great dog. Most boxers live to 9 or 10 and have a very high rate of cancer. Sweet William finally has found his "forever" home!

Sweet William, a 2 year old purebred boxer finally has found his "forever" home! Ariel Rescue saved his life.

William has had a very hard start in young life and he is only two years old. He was brought to the Orange County Animal Shelter by his owner in October. This is the same owner who previously adopted William from the same shelter, just one year earlier. The owner did not leave a reason why he was turning William into the shelter.

Ariel Rescue found out about William's plight. He needed our help. Two times is two times too many for a dog to have to be at a high-kill shelter. People won't adopt a dog that has been "returned" . William is a wonderful dog with a terrific disposition. We are so happy William has finally found a home at last.

11 Year Old Sheltie With Recurring Bladder Infection

Q: My 11 year old sheltie, Cody, is fully recovered from bladder cancer thanks to Protocel but he has a lingering UTI. My vet is alternating Clavimox with Baytril after a few weeks off one or the other (pulse therapy). This does not seem to be working. Can you recommend something to get rid of his UTI and preventing a relapse?

Dog Chewing Paws--What Does This Mean?

Q: My dog has one paw that he chews and won't leave alone. I have tried everything I can think of to get him to stop (like aloe vera, vitamin-e, even putting a sock on his paw). I just got him a cone (Elisabeth collar) to see if it will help discourage him from chewing. So far soaking the paw in black tea seems to help soothe it. A: Dear KT: When dogs are chewing on their paws, it is due to allergies. They may have an environmental allergy to grass or it could be overall environmental allergies. Usually though there is some type of yeast overgrowth and the more they chew, the wet saliva can create a yeasty, smelly overgrowth inbetween the toes. I have a couple of suggestions:

Getting on the scale, as much as we loathe it, is the single best objective way to measure our overall health. Scales are available at lots of big chain stores as well as your vet's office. For small pets, you can weigh yourself first and then hold your pet to see the difference. Keep a log of your pet's weight.

A: Sorry to hear your kitty is so sick. There are quite a few things you can try to help stop your cat's diarrhea. First and foremost, be sure to take your cat to the veterinarian. Your cat could be very dehydrated and may need fluid therapy and/or medication. Also, using a few supplements such as Power Probiotic or the IBD Kit would really help too.

Cats often develop diarrhea and IBD due to the food you may be feeding. Do not feed your cat food that contains grains such as wheat, gluten, oats, etc and also for some cats, poultry may be an issue. Golden Retriever Getting Recurring Ear Infections

Q: I have put both of my Golden Retrievers on a grain free diet. Both are doing well including improvement of a loose stool issue with my senior dog. My youngest dog is 3, he has has also improved in some areas but does get reoccurring ear infections from yeast even on a grain free dog food. What are possible other causes for him to get recurring ear infections?

A. Ideally, for pets that are getting recurring yeast and ear infections, you want to use a raw frozen diet, if at all possible. Raw frozen diets are highly digestible. You can use a raw frozen diet in combination with homemade. You just need to be sure the proteins are completely hypoallergenic. Q: Is there a relationship between my dog's hypothyroidism and his diet? I have a 7 year old labrador retriever who has just been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. He is about 10 pounds overweight and has been eating a commercial kibble.

A: This is a great question. Yes, there is absolutely a relationship between the quality of a pet's diet and thyroid health. Your labrador retriever's hypothyrodism can definitely be helped using an improved diet, plenty of vegetables and a few supplements.

Imbalances in the thyroid occur differently in dogs and cats. Dogs can have a tendency to become hypothyroid while cats can become hyperthyroid. Some pets may have allergies or food intolerances and when the food is ingested, it can cause inflammation and a heightened immune response. If your dog has skin allergies, ear infections and/or is itchy, the food you are using could be a problem. It is important to give all allergic dogs and cats a grain-free, hypoallergenic diet. In addition, using a purified omega oil such as Amazing Omegas can make a big difference too.

In addition, giving pets foods that contain chemicals, byproducts and other unhealthy ingredients can cause digestive problems. Skippy is just 10 pounds and is fully grown. Skippy is great with everyone ~ men, women and children ~ he would be a great dog for the entire family! He is an active, friendly companion that you can take everywhere ~ he loves to ride in the car and likes to go for walks. Skippy also loves to play with his doggie toys. Skippy would like nothing better than to sit in your lap and keep you company."

"Simon" had found a home in April 2011. He went home to be a companion for their other dog. Unfortunately Simon's owners decided that they could no longer care for their dogs. Simon was returned to Ariel Rescue. He is now looking for his "forever" home.

Diet For Bichon Frise Bladder Stones (Calcium Oxalate Stones and Struvite)

Q: We have a lovely soon going to be 8 yr old Bichon Frise that has had 3 operations to remove bladder stones. I believe the first two were Struvite in nature but the last one was Cal Oxalate. A: Sorry to hear that your dog has had constant bladder stones (struvite and calcium oxalate stones). While it is true that some breeds such as Bichon Frise are more prone to developing bladder stones, we have worked successfully with many of these pets to prevent future bladder stones from reoccuring. Diet has EVERYTHING to do with it! Using the appropriate diet along with some key supplements can make a tremendous difference in preventing future bladder stones. From a conventional veterinary perspective, pets are given prescription diets that manipulate the urinary pH which are often unsuccessful. These diets contain corn, byproducts and other fillers and there are much healthier, nutrition options. In addition, by altering the pH of a pet's urine one way using prescription diets (e.g. in your dog's case, she had struvite which grow in alkaline urine) the pet then becomes too acidic and develops calcium oxalate stones which grow in acidic urine. The key is to get your pet on a diet that is pH neutral using wholesome, hypoallergenic foods.

At Thanksgiving, it is very tempting to want to “treat” our pets to something special such as gravy, turkey drippings and table food. Q: I have a 15 yr old kitty who has always been a barfer, believe me tests and money spent--nothing except maybe she had hairballs and she has had enemas when she gets constipated which is also something from time to time she has had even aas a kitten. We did bloodwork, no prob; ultrasound showed IBD or IBS---she has lost weight, a lot for her size, vomits most of her wet food several times a week. likes dry food---i just now got her to eat only wet w/pumpkin, probiotics, flax, etc...and a small course of pred to help the inflammation. Everything fine for a couple days now she just barfed her prednisone and her food. She is a real pain to subQ; the older cat gets fluids 2x a week, he is easy but she hates it! i havent attempted since she bit me so hard i lost feeling in one of my joints. She is ordinarily a sweet cat but seems cranky and unhappy. I am adding glutamine to her diet and i think the wet is going to be ok w.fiber, etc...but she now threw up. it has been 4-5 days i thought we had it taken care of. she also leaves hard little pellets outside the box. can i give her Colace? I also give her lactulose which she doesnt like but i think helps--but even i can tell she needs hydration. thanks--

A: So sorry your kitty has been so uncomfortable. Chronic vomitting is usually due to food allergies. The most common food allergies in cats are poultry, grains and sometimes fish. A: Many pets and people are allergic to wheat and grains. In general, I do not recommend giving pets any grains because they can trigger allergies and a lot of health problems. Halloween Safety Tips For Pets

Please follow these important precautions to ensure that you and your your pets have a safe and happy holiday!

1) Keep candy (chocolate is toxic) away from pesky paws! Many of our pets display amazing dexterity to reach those delicious sweet treats. Gum and diet candies are also toxic if they contain Xylitol. Xylitol can have fast, fatal consequences because it can cause a precipitous drop in blood sugar (acute hypoglycemia) and/or liver failure. It is easy to leave a pack of gum sitting out on the counter or on the car seat. Doublecheck before bedtime to make sure that the candy and gum has been stored in a secure cabinet in all rooms!

2) Watch out for Jack O'Lanterns and burning candles. Pets can easily knock them over, starting a fire. Electrical cords can be fun for a puppy to chew on. Be extra vigilant about keeping an eye out for your pet's location and activities.

3) Keep all cats (particularly black cats) and shy, nervous dogs safely inside a room away from the noise. Doorbells and excited trick-or-treaters can be very scary to them.

4) If your dog is happy greeting guests (and may even like to dress up!), then be sure to hold your dog firmly on a leash when you open the door. Masks and costumes can be very confusing to pets. Even a very calm dog might snap if a scary figure in a dark costume rapidly approaches them and the dog feels threatened.

5) Be sure all pets are fed and walked before trick-or-treaters arrive.

Legend's Big Day--Just wanted to take a moment and share my joy that Legend, my husky rescue dog just celebrated 6 months without having a seizure. --Physical (e.g., temperature) or psychological (e.g., introduction of a new cat) stressors
--Poor nutrition

Sick cats (especially sickness associated with a weakened immune system or other respiratory infection)

How is Feline HerpesVirus 1 Transmitted?
FHV-1 is shed through the discharge from an infected cat’s eyes, nose, and mouth. Contact with these secretions is a potential mode of transmission. The most common mode of transmission appears to be contact with contaminated objects that an infected cat has touched or sneezed on including cages, food and water bowls, litter trays, pet owner's clothing, and the pet owner's hands.

The same pathogenesis occurs with the feline herpesvirus as with the human herpesvirus. Puppy with Demodex Mange Gets New "Leash" on Life

Annie was in big trouble. She was at the Orange County Anmimal Care Cernter, which is a high-kill shelter in Orange, California. Annie was being kept in isolation because she had tested positive for Demodectic Mange. All dogs have demodectic mange, but their healthy immune systems keep it under control.

Annie's immune system was compromised because of the stress of having to survive on the streets. She was four months old when she was brought to the shelter. The shelter had her listed as a male, and they had named her "Comet". She was not up for adoption to the general public. She had fur loss on her face and on her front legs.

Ariel Rescue saw that she needed our help! An Ariel Rescue volunteer was allowed to visit with "him". The kennel attendant had been told not to touch the dog and only to let the Ariel Rescue volunteer go into the kennel to visit with "him". The volunteer saw that "Comet" was just a sweet puppy, so the volunteer went to adopt "him". The volunteer was told that "Comet" could not stay at the shelter to be neutered; "he" had to be removed from the shelter immediately.

The volunteer took "Comet" to the vet to be examined. Imagine the volunteer's surprise when they found out that "Comet" was a female! New name -- "Annie". The vet said that they should wait a few weeks before Annie could be spayed, to give Annie's immune system a chance to improve.

Meanwhile Annie was being fostered by an Ariel Rescue volunteer. Annie was given very healthy food to eat. Eating Grass & Vomiting--Is this Normal?

It is quite common for cats and dogs to eat grass. Eating grass in and of itself is not a sign of anything as many pets like the taste and enjoy a little vegetation to munch on. Both healthy pets and sick pets will eat grass. It is the behaviors that go along with grass eating that, as a pet owner, you need to watch out for, as it can be a sign of an acid stomach and digestive problem

1) Is your pet "drawn" to the grass, showing signs of needing to get to the grass such as whining or pulling toward it?

2) Does your pet vomit hairballs or bile afterwards? Is your pet vomiting frequently?

3) Is your pet eating large amounts of grass?

Some grazing on grass is natural but when pets are specifically looking for it as if they really need it, this can be a sign of acid stomach or poor digestion. Many times pets reach for the grass as a way to make themselves vomit too. If you notice your pet is eating a lot of grass, then it's important to watch for other signs of digestive discomfort. If you notice your pet is having rumbling noises after eating, loose stool, gas, vomiting, bad breath or other signs of digestive discomfort, it is important to bring this to the attention of your veterinarian. Pictured above is Bugsy, a 3 year old Pekingese mix. Bugsy came into the Orange County Shelter as a stray. He was very underweight from not having enough food to eat when he was living on the streets. His fur was very dry and coarse. His skin was in very bad condition due to having fleas and very dirty fur.

Bugsy spent a month at The Orange County Animal Care Center. Many dogs got adopted during that time, but no one could see what a special dog Bugsy was. That is when Ariel Rescue stepped in and adopted Bugsy.

Unfortunately, the answer is yes. Kidney disease affects both cats and dogs, mostly in their senior years. However, young pets may have congenital deformities that can affect their kidney health at an early age too. Kidney disease can be insidious and "suddenly" appear even though your pet may have seemed perfectly healthy the day before. Or, the signs can be so subtle, such as not wanting to eat in the morning, that pet owners just attribute it to old age. Since kidney disease can often be a fatal condition, annual laboratory testing (blood and urine) is critical, along with watching out for the warning signs and notifying your veterinarian if you see them.

Warning Signs of Kidney Disease in Cats and Dogs

Lethargy, fatigue
Loss of appetite, especially in the morning
Weight loss
Increased water drinking
Increased urination
Pain, discomfort in the back
Strong, (ammonia-like) breath odor

Please note that many of the above signs are also seen in pets that do not have renal insufficiency. Regardless, these are signs your pet has some type of health condition and a visit to your veterinarian is warranted.

What Do The Kidneys Do?

The kidneys filter out toxins in the blood such as metabolic wastes, drugs and excess mineral salts as well as regulate the acidity of the blood. The kidneys also help regulate blood pressure, the production of calcium and phosphorus metabolism, and produce a hormone that stimulates red-blood-cell production called erythropoietin. Since the kidneys perform so many important functions, it is easy to see why kidney malfunction would greatly impact the way your pet feels and behaves. Unfortunately, laboratory tests may not always show kidney insufficiency until your pet’s kidney function is about 65-70% deteriorated but using this tool, along with watching the warning signs, is the best way for your veterinarian to diagnose the condition.

What Will Laboratory Tests Tell Me About My Pet's Kidneys?

In the blood, three levels are especially important to test for kidney disease. These are creatinine, BUN (blood urea nitrogen) and phosphorous. BUN measures the amount of urea nitrogen, a waste product of protein metabolism in the blood. Urea is formed by the liver and then taken by the blood to the kidneys for excretion. Because urea is cleared from the bloodstream by the kidneys, a buildup in the blood is an indicator that the kidneys are not functioning properly. Creatinine and phosphorous are also important markers for kidney disease, as they are also products excreted by the kidneys. A urine analysis also provides important information regarding your pet’s kidney health. Specific gravity of the urine measures the degree to which your pet is properly concentrating urine. In addition, your veterinarian will look to see if there is protein in the urine. Healthy kidneys will remove the waste from the blood but retain the protein. Impaired kidneys may fail to separate blood protein from the wastes. At first, only small amounts of protein may leak into the urine but as time and the disease progresses, the amount of protein in the urine increases.

How Can I Help My Pet If Diagnosed With Kidney Disease?

The goal of treatment is to help the pet to live as close to a normal life as possible, given the kidney disease diagnoses. Intravenous and subcutaneous fluids can provide much needed relief for pets. Intravenous fluids are administered by your veterinarian at the veterinary hospital while subcutaneous fluids can be administered by you at home under the direction of your veterinarian. Fluids help to flush out the toxins and control acid-base imbalances. Pets with kidney disease need a phosphorous-controlled diet. Two Abandoned Dogs Adopted Into One Loving Home

Suzie and Sadie "Dropped Off" at the Shelter---Now in a Loving Home Together--Suzie and Sadie were left at the shelter by someone who claimed they happened to find them independently. The OC Shelter saw the bond between the two dogs and it was obvious they had lived together prior to being suddenly discovered as stray dogs. Ariel Rescue saved them from the shelter and brought them to the veterin...arian for complete checkups. Sadie 2 year Maltese/poodle mix is on the left and Suzie 3 yr lhasa apso/poodle mix on the right. In this economy, it is extremely difficult to place one dog, let alone two together. The financial burdens, as you know, of owning two dogs can be difficult. Fortunately, a single mother and her daughter adopted them together. Here they are--a new happy family.

Pelicans Saved By 2 Good Samaritans

When you go to the beach or harbor on a sunny summer day, it is easy to get mesmerized by the tranquil waters and beautiful surf. The last thing you might expect is to see an animal fighting for its life. My husband Stuart went kayaking for a few hours just outside the Dana Point Harbor. He was enjoying the peaceful breeze and crystal blue water when he saw some commotion out in the water. There were two pelicans flapping about. He couldn't figure out what they were doing and thought they must be playing. He thought it was strange they were so close to one another so he paddled closer to see what might be going on. He soon saw that they were desperately trying to separate themselves and were locked together by a fishing line. Each Pelican had a fish hook (double hook line) stuck in its beak and they were attached by the small amount of line in between. The poor birds were exhausted and would drown if they couldn't get free.

Stuart stayed with the birds until another kayaker came upon them. Thankfully the other kayaker was a fisherman and happened to have a pair of plyers. Unbelievably, each pelican (these are huge birds with 4 foot wing spans) allowed them to hold them and pull the hooks out. Stuart thought he was going to get bit to pieces and would have to let go but the pelicans allowed the men to hold them and remove the hooks. The reason they were so compliant is that the birds were simply exhausted and probably sensed this was their last hope. What the two men theorized is that the pelicans must have swooped in to grab a fishermans's catch and since there was a double line of bait, rather than pull the birds in, the fisherman cut the line. The birds would have died. What they needed to do was actually pull the birds in and remove the hooks from their beaks.

In any case, I am happy to report that both pelicans flew off to safety and were saved because two good men cared enough to help them!

3 Myths About Your Pet’s Prescription Diet

When your veterinarian recommends a prescription diet for your pet, it is because your pet has a health condition that requires dietary modification. Your veterinarian has your pet’s best interest in mind and is trying to help you take better care of your pet.

What is a pet prescription diet? A prescription diet is a commercially prepared food scientifically formulated to address a specific health condition. For example, a kidney diet has reduced protein and phosphorous. When pets are diagnosed with various health conditions, dietary modification can make a significant impact on their health and well-being. The adage “you are what you eat” holds true.

There is an important point of clarification however. Yes-- your pet needs to follow a diet based on a scientific formulary prescribing specific nutritional requirements (e.g. low fat, high fiber, low sodium). But, what is often misunderstood however, is that the only option for achieving this dietary formulary is by using commercially prepared prescription food. In other words, just because your pet needs a low fat, high fiber diet doesn’t mean that there is only one way to serve it using a canned or dry commercially prepared “prescription food”. There are homemade and combined homemade/commercial alternatives and it is important for you to know your options so that you can make an informed decision about what is best for your pet.

Myth #1---The Commercially Prepared Prescription Diet Is the Only Food OPTION My Pet Can Eat

Yes and No—The reason your pet needs to be on a prescription diet is because it is a “prescription” regarding various food groups such as fats, protein and carbohydrates as well as the vitamin and mineral content. For example, pets with kidney disease need a diet low in phosphorous. So—yes, if your veterinarian has diagnosed a disease, you should follow the vet’s prescription regarding your pet’s nutritional needs . However, this doesn’t mean that the only food choice is the dry and canned food commercial options available at your veterinarian’s office. You can prepare a homemade option or use a combination of homemade with raw frozen food or other commercial foods, but the point is that whatever you feed, it needs to meet the nutritional needs set forth in the prescription!

It would be difficult for the average pet owner to figure out the appropriate dietary alternatives for their pet within the confines of the “prescribed guidelines” In fact, there is a risk that if you are doing a lot of food combining on your own, you may end up doing more harm than good. It is quite common for pet owners to use the prescription commercial food all the while adding in miscellaneous treats and table scraps, thereby defeating the whole purpose. The point here is that there are natural, homemade and alternative ways to give your pet a “prescription” diet beyond the commercial prescription foods but it is highly recommended that you seek out the advice of a pet nutritionist or holistic veterinarian to ensure the diet meets the nutritional needs of your pet.

MYTH #2—It’s Okay to Feed My Pet’s Prescription Diet to All of My Pets

Not necessarily---Not unless all of your pets have the same health problems and require the same prescription diet. In multiple pet households, it is quite common for pet owners to feed the same food to all of their pets. Would you give the same medication to all of your pets too? Prescription diets are a dietary formulary that restrict certain ingredients—this might be advantageous for the pet for whom the diet is prescribed, but not for other pets. For example, a pet owner may have a senior cat and a 2 year old cat. A young cat needs a high protein, high fat diet. If a young cat is fed a prescription kidney diet, the cat may experience muscle atrophy and other health problems associated with a low protein diet. This is again, why it is so important to either consult with a pet nutritionist or holistic veterinarian or ensure that each pet is only eating the food that is designated for them.

MYTH #3 –If My Pet Has Multiple Health Problems, a Commercially Prepared Prescription Diet Will Address All of my Pet’s Nutritional Needs

Not necessarily—When pets have multiple health issues occurring, commercial pet food options are not nearly as successful. For example, a dog may have severe allergies and liver disease. There is no one “magic” formula a vet can prescribe to address multiple health problems. The commercially prescribed liver diets may be lower in fat and liver-friendly, but will most likely contain grains which the pet could be allergic to. And even when a pet is using a commercially prepared prescription diet for one health condition, another one may develop in the process. For example, pets that are prone to bladder stones may use a prescription diet to prevent the bladder stones but then develop hot spots and itching. if your pet has multiple health conditions, using a custom-tailored diet specifically designed for your pet by a holistic veterinarian or pet nutritionist is a more beneficial approach.

When your pet is diagnosed with a particular health condition, you want to do what’s best to help. Diet clearly has an impact but there are many ways to approach your pet’s health problem. The important point is to know that there are options.

In Memory Of Maverick

Expressing my heartfelt sympathy for Karen, Ask Ariel Office Manager who lost her beloved Maverick today. Maverick fought a very long multi-year fight with cancer and diabetes and died as a very senior pet (over 15 years old) with his Mom today. Karen took amazing care of Maverick and dedicated her entire life's schedule to care for him and ensure he received his insulin shots on time.

Karen rescued Maverick after his original owner died and due to her loving care, he was able to live a high quality and long life in such a loving home. At the time she rescued him, Maverick was in a state of ketoacidosis and liver dysfunction. Karen nursed him back to health, gave him a proper diet and helped Maverick regain his health.

Karen is also the head volunteer of Ariel Rescue and tirelessly gives of her time to help save so many desperate dogs at the shelters. My favorite story about Karen is when she drove several hours to help out another rural rescue whose dogs were all going to be euthanized. On the way back, there was a deep fog and it took Karen much longer to drive home than anticipated. The vet hospital where she had planned to bring all the dogs was now closed so she had no choice but to find places for all of them in her house for the night. She had to bring 11 dogs to her home that evening and when her little boy (now a college graduate) woke up to go to the bathroom, he found puppies in there and threatened to call Daddy who was on a business trip! Karen will do anything to help an animal in need and our hearts and prayers go out to her during this difficult time.

A: Some dogs like to eat a little bit of grass to graze as a treat. However, most of the time, when dogs are looking for grass to eat on a routine basis, it can be a sign of an acid stomach. This is especially true if the dog is eating the grass and then vomiting afterward. There are many reasons why a dog could have an acid stomach. It is important to have your bulldog evaluated by a veterinarian, especially if you have an older pet who is also inappetant.

One primary reason for grass eating however is the food you are feeding. Could be your bulldog is not digesting the food properly because it contains grains such as wheat and corn or your bulldog could be allergic to the meat proteins such as chicken. A lot of bulldogs have allergies and the problems start in the digestive tract. First and foremost, give your bulldog some digestive support by using a digestive enzyme and probiotic. Peanut Butter--This is often a favorite method for administering pills to dogs. Peanut butter can be a huge allergen and should definitely be avoided if your dog has any type of allergy or skin problems such as ear infections, hot spots, or paw chewing/licking. Also, it is very high in fat and should not be used for any dogs with liver or pancreatitis conditions. Alternatives for administering pills are canned dog food, hummus or hypoallergenic Pill Pockets.

Tuna Water--Many pet owners add tuna water to their cat's food on a routine basis. This is usually because the cat isn't eating well due to health concerns such as kidney disease. Tuna water is high in phosphorous (bad for the kidneys) and contains mercury. This just isn't a good habit to get into. Safer alternatives are low sodium chicken or beef broth or an alternative canned cat food used as a "topper".

If all of the above reasons for colitis and bloody stools have been ruled out, and no obvious cause is determined, your veterinarian may diagnose your dog with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which can be characterized by a variety of gastrointestinal symptoms including vomitting, diarrhea, bloody stools, nausea, loud abdominal noises, colitis, abdominal pain and more. In this situation, the usual culprit is the diet that you are giving your dog. Take a close look at the label and be sure your dog is not getting grains such as wheat, corn, oats or grits---these can be irritating to some dogs and cause an allergic reaction. Dog Odor? Look for hot spots, fleas, genital licking and skin flaking during the summer

Does your dog have an odor? During the summer you need to be your pet's best detective and look for hidden problems. If you have a hairy dog or a dog that has a thick coat such as a husky or golden retriever, many skin issues could be lurking below. An odor is the first sign that something is off. The best way to check out your dog is to pet him gently and see if you can get your pet to rollover on his back. Then, inspect in the inner thighs, tummy and under the armpits and neck. Inspect your dog's paws to see if there are lumps or areas of fur missing.

Even though your dog's coat might look nice on the back, you might find hair loss, hot spots, fleas and skin flaking. Mr. Bojangles Is Dancing Again!

From Worthless and Abandoned To Cherished & Loved: Mr. Bojangles is Dancing Again!

Pictured above is Mr. Bojangles, a 4 year old Italian Greyhound Miniature Poodle mix. Mr. Bojangles came into the Orange County Shelter as a stray. He was covered with mats and you couldn't even see his face under all his matted hair. His skin was in very bad condition due to having fleas and matted fur.

The Orange County Animal Care Center had a special adoption event where all the adoption fees were waived and the dogs could be adopted for free. Still Mr. Bojangles did not get taken out of the shelter. His value was "worthless" and no one was even willing to take him.

The next day, Ariel Rescue adopted him and gave him a "beauty bath and haircut". A brand new dog emerged from all that matted hair. Mr. Bojangles was a happy, healthy dog ready to play and have fun!

Mr. Bojangles was adopted by a couple who have a female Bichon Frise. Mr. Bojangles never has to worry about being overlooked ever again. He is now the pampered, cherished pup that he should be.

Feline Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a diagnoses used for a variety of intestinal disorders found in cats. The disorders are characterized by an abnormal accumulation of inflammatory cells in the lining of the intestine. Your veterinarian may have diagnosed feline IBD after obtaining a biopsy which shows an abnormal accumulation of inflammatory cells. Other causes of inflammation such as parasites, bacterial or viral infections, exposure to toxic substances and pancreatic causes of small bowel disorders would have been ruled out. Signs that your cat may have inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) include chronic diarrhea, weight loss, vomiting, loss of appetite, nausea (licking of lips) and gurgling noises in the intestine. The vomit may contain bile or hairballs. There may be mucus, blood and straining with bowel movements and fecal matter outside the litter box.

Is It Too Late To Try Supplements When My Dog Has Lymphoma?

Q: Have a 12 1/2 yr old shiba inu dx 1/2010 with b-cell lymphoma, stage 3a. Did 19 wk CHOP proto and she went into clinical remission after 4th treatment. Very few side effects. Immediately changed diet to hi protein/fat, low carb, no grain. Added l-arginine pills (n/d food wasn't tolerated). Added k9 immunity and some antioxidants. Finished proto - went 3 1/2 mos before it re-emerged. Started CHOP again, went into clinical remission quickly, finished protocol this past April - held remission for another 3 1/2 months - started to re-emerge again. Changed to elspar/lomustine as her response to CHOP was slower than the first two times. So far - so good - nodes are very close to being completely down.

Feel like I am missing an all important supplement for her. She takes metacam daily (hip dysplasia & arthritis) and soloxine for her thyroid. Was thinking of arteminisin but not sure about the dosing requirements. Heard that maritime pine bark is not recommended by another doc on the internet. Am open to homeopathic supplements - is it to late for your lymph support product for her? She still has good vitality and bright, clear eyes...

14 year old Boxer With Dementia Keeps Going Strong!

Sophie, our sweet boxer, is now 14 years old. Boxers generally only live 8 - 10 years.Thanks to Ask Ariel's (http://www.askariel.com/) diet and supplement program, Sophie is going strong physically and mentally. Constipation, IBD and MegaColon in Cats

Can you please help? My 13 year old cat has recently developed a problem with having a bowel movement. It seems as if she gets into position to defecate and then passes only a small quantity of poop. I haven't changed her diet on done anything different. What could be wrong?

Dear P.B,
Although your kitty's inability to pass stool is not normal, there could be a lot of reasons why this is now occurring. Perhaps she is in pain and cannot maintain the position long enough to facillitate a bowel movement or maybe she is drinking less water than she should and has now become constipated. Another scenario could be that she is drinking adequate amounts of water, but her kidney function has deteriorated, not allowing her body to absorb necessary fluid. A normal hydration status is very important in maintaining proper digestive tract health. She may also have lost some strength with her advancing age and could be having problems "pushing" the stool out.

There could also be a mechanical obstruction to the outflow of the stool. If something is blocking the passage of the stool (a growth or tumor), your kitty may strain and strain but will be unable to pass normal quantities of stool. The stool that is passed may be blood tinged and very hard.

Often veterinarians are presented with elderly cats that have become so constipated that the stool is, literally, rock hard in the colon. It takes a very perceptive owner to realize that their pet is having problems passing stool since most cats are fairly discreet and secretive about their bathroom habits. The first sign is usually a decrease in the normal quantity of stool that must be cleaned from the litter box. If undetected, some of these cats will have distended the walls of the colon to such a degree that nothing can possibly pass. If this rock hard stool is present for more than a day or two, they may also lose the ability to feel how much stool becomes stagnant there. The resulting condition is termed "megacolon" which is the presence of a large, distended colon devoid of any feeling.

Veterinarians are not really sure why certain elderly cats develop megacolon and others are able to have normal bowel movements their entire lives. This condition is currently under investigation at many university hospitals. Usually, once a cat has developed this condition, it can be managed with diet, laxatives, and medicines, but it is seldom reversible. It certain severely affected patients, surgery may be considered to eliminate the portion of the colon that has become devoid of sensation.

Usually your veterinarian will try to determine if there are any underlying causes for this condition. This may necessitate a battery of tests (bloodwork, urine analysis) if the doctor is not able to palpate "or feel" a mass in the distal colon that is causing the obstruction. The doctor may want to take xrays to determine how obstructed or constipated your cat is. To relieve the obstruction, many of these patients must be anesthetized to allow the doctor to relieve the obstruction.Warm water enemas with stool softeners are used to try to break down the rock hard stool. Digital manipulation is sometimes successful.

Management of these cats after relieving the obstruction involves using oral laxatives and stool softeners to "keep things moving" and motility modifiers to inhibit re-obstruction. Dietary changes and supplements such as fish oil and Probiotics may also help. The most successful motility modifier is called "Propulsid". This used to be readily available for human patients but has since been withdrawn by the FDA. Your veterinarian can still get this medication compounded by a special pharmacist. Unfortunately, once a kitty has presented for a severe case of megacolon, it is usually something that will need attention for the rest of the cat's life. With some guidance, good nutrition, and good veterinary care, any of these cats can go on to lead a fairly normal life.

Signs that your pet may have IBD include chronic diarrhea, weight loss, vomiting, loss of appetite, nausea (licking of lips) and gurgling noises in the intestine. The vomit may contain bile and in cats it may contain hairballs. There may be mucus, blood and straining with bowel movements.

Seizures in Dogs Can Be Controlled with Holistic Treatments, Changing Diet and Using Natural Supplements

Special Milestone for Legend our 3 year old Husky Dog who was having seizures.--Today is exactly 3 months since Legend last had a seizure. This is extremely exciting for us since he is not using any medication---just supplements and a very strict diet. Legend is a rescue dog who is approx. 3 years old. He started getting seizures in December 2010. They were between 2 -6 weeks apart. We were able to lengthen the time periods between seizures by changing his diet and using some supplements but finally, when we put it all together, there is clearly now a very noticeable improvement.

The supplements we are using to help prevent seizures are the Neuroflam, B Complex #12, Amazing Omegas, Liver Rescue, Power Probiotic, Oxicell, Biothyro and Brain Vitale---yes it is a lot, but as we added more, we found the length of time between seizures has continued to improve. We feed him at the same times each day---4 small meals so that his blood sugar is regulated. Also, it is very important to note that even if a dog's thyroid levels appear "normal", just as with people, it is important to equally consider the symptoms of hypothyroidism. When a dog has a seizure, it is extremely upsetting. The first time, I found out because Legend was outside barking in an odd tone. I then realized that his "playing on his back" and leg movements were part of the seizure. He was extremely agitated for at least an hour following the seizure and we rushed him to the veterinarian. Everything went back to normal until the next time......watching a pet paddling on the ground going into a grand mal seizure is devastating. Each time, we kept asking ourselves "what had we fed him" "what happened the day before" and yes, there were clues. Definitely dogs that have seizures need to be on a strict regimen with a hypoallergenic diet, regular feeding schedules and supplements to support their brain function. Ariel Rescue Finds a Wonderful Home For Zeke, An Abandoned Stray Dog at the Shelter

Pictured above is Ariel Rescue dog Zeke (tan/white dog) along with his sister Xena. Zeke is a 6 month old labrador retreiver mix from the OC shelter. He came into the shelter as a stray. He was so frightened, he would not walk, not one step. He had to be carried to the visiting area for the Ariel Rescue volunteer to meet him. After he was rescued, he had to be carried out of the shelter to the car, carried to the vet and, finally, carried into the home of the house where he was fostered.

Two weeks of loving care from the Ariel Rescue volunteers helped Zeke find a forever home. Here he is happy at last, a few weeks later with his new sister. Many rescue dogs may display unusual behaviors, refusing to eat, walk and act as though they wish they were "invisible". This is out of sheer terror. Once they know they are safe, they become a wonderful pet.

Dog arthritis: Get pain relief now!

Many dogs start slowing down with age, limping or showing signs of difficulty getting up and down. Dog Dandruff: Use fish oil to stop your dog's flaking skin

Dog dandruff is never cute, especially when the dry, flakey skin is getting all over your house and clothes. A dog's skin is a reflection of what is going on the inside, and many times when a dog's skin is flaking (dog dandruff), pet owners think the dog needs topical lotions or creams. While sure, using a topical cream rinse can help temporarily to reduce the dog dandruff, that is not a permanent answer. The problem needs to be resolved internally. The dog's coat is dry because the diet does not contain enough essential fatty acids e.g. Omega 3 fatty acids. Perhaps you have heard them referred to as Omega 3s. There are different types of Omega 3s available for pets and you need to be very careful. Many times pet owners think they are buying the "best" but getting very little for their money. Fish oil, especially in pet products can be heavily diluted with water when it is manufactured or it can be altered significantly in the manufacturing process. In addition, fish oil and flax seed oil, two important sources of Omega 3s, can contain a lot of contaminants, PCBs, toxins such as mercury.

Somethin' smells fishy!-- There are a few criteria to know if the Omega 3s or Fish Oil you are using are really as good as they claim to be:

First, if they make you or your pet belch, chances are it is the contaminants in the product. A purified fish oil should not give you that continual, nasty aftertaste. It should go down and stay down!

Stop and think the next time you buy your pet’s food. Look at the label. What’s really in there? Is there corn, wheat gluten, brewer’s rice and other fillers? Are there names you can’t pronounce such as ethoxyquin? What are they doing in your pet’s food anyway?

Your pet’s food label should list fresh ingredients such as meat, fish, vegetables and healthy omega 3 fats. Invest in a high quality brand and you’ll find that instead of spending more on the high quality brand you’re actually SAVING money because you’ll end up using about ½ the recommended amounts (it takes a lot more food to fill up a pet using food that is loaded with fillers) AND the long-term benefits to your pet are immeasurable. Avoid purchasing those cleverly marketed, commercially prepared treats that make you think you are actually doing good for your pet. You know—the ones in pretty shapes and colors (e.g. orange carrot-shaped treats made to give you the impression you are giving your pet a carrot) or with dogs begging on the front of the package. Don’t be fooled either by those “all natural” economy packs (sold at the big warehouse stores). Many of these “all natural” jerky treats are manufactured with harsh chemicals and contaminants. Pets can get upset tummies and health problems from eating them. The "bargain" treat bag can actually end up costing you money because of the long-term health consequences on your pet.

Instead, use fresh ingredients right from your kitchen. There are lots of affordable, healthy options. For dogs, give them apple slices, baby carrots, a slice of potato, a piece of hardboiled egg or a piece of fresh, LEAN meat. Your cat would much prefer a piece of salmon or fish anyday over a treat that looks like fish made with corn flour, by-products and syrup.

Veterinary bills will most likely be the single largest expense for your pet. By far though, the highest veterinary bills arise from emergency, unplanned visits. You can actually keep your veterinary bills under control by planning ahead and making smart choices NOW! With a bad economy comes bad decisions that can have permanent effects on your pet’s quality of life and longevity. How many of us have thought about switching to a lower cost food, skipping on the vet exam or delaying much needed laboratory work for our pets??? DON’T! A penny saved today will not result in a pound tomorrow—just the opposite. There are plenty of other healthy ways you can save—e.g. drinking less coffee, bringing lunch to work, cutting back on alcohol, candy bars or cigarettes and still do your best for your pet.

Exercise! Exercise with your pet and you will see the dollars flow in over the years. Want to know one of the main reasons pets end up at the veterinary office with emergency, unplanned visits? Well, many of the them have diabetes, cancer, joint problems, liver problems—all have strong correlations with obesity and being overfed and underexcercised. Obesity, lack of exercise is not just a matter of style or looks—it is a matter of good health. Take out a feather or laser toy for your cat--- go for a walk with your dog and everybody benefits! Not only will you save money on your veterinary bills but you will build a stronger bond with your pet and give them a happier, healthier life!
